ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH RETREAT: Sacred Community—the Repose of the Living!

St Andrew's Church retreat with Bishop Keith Ackerman

Teaching, Reflection & Rest

Enjoy a time of peace and serenity! Join us at St. Andrew’s Church, Academy, & College to participate in our daily cadence of communal living and worship. This multi-day retreat takes place the afternoon of Wednesday, February 8th through the morning of Saturday, February 11th (with an option to stay an extra night to midday Sunday) and features guest speaker Bishop Keith Ackerman discussing how Word and Sacrament in community arm us to live a truly balanced life.

Some of you may remember the Jan Karon Mitford series of novels about an episcopal priest.  Bishop Ackerman was the model for the books’ leading character, Father Tim.

The threefold order of prayer should order our life; it will order our retreat as we engage the question of how this order interacts and works out in community. The threefold order has always, historically, been at the heart of the life of community in the church.

Here is the basic Rule of the Church which, varying in detail, is common to East and West, monastic and secular…and which forms the over-all structure of the Book of Common Prayer. Amongst all the tests of Catholicity or orthodoxy, it is curious that this infallible and living test, is so seldom applied. We write and argue endlessly about the apostolic tradition, about…sacramentalism, creeds, doctrine, the Bible—all very important things—yet we fail to see that no group of Christians is true to orthodoxy if it fails to live by this Rule of trinity-in-unity: Mass-Office-devotion.”

—Martin Thornton, English Spirituality

The threefold order—Communion, the daily office, and private devotions—provides a defining structure upon which a disciple of Christ may build a fruitful life of obedience and devotion. Regardless of where you are personally you will be sure to learn and grow as you take a break to focus on the structure of your spiritual life and how it relates to the corporate life of the Church, the Body of Christ.

We will worship together in Choral Evensong and Choral Matins each day and celebrate the Eucharist on Friday. Dormitory lodging—and the gourmet meals St. Andrew’s is famous for—are included.

NOTE:

If you are interested in extending your retreat to remain with us and attend Mass on Sunday, with lunch following at the Vicarage, please inquire about this option.

If finances are an obstacle to attending the retreat, please contact us about scholarship opportunities. We’d love to have you join us and we will work with you to see that you may attend.
